Basic Procedure for Mechanical Polishing of Rotational Mold

(1) Rough-cast molds The surfaces after roughing, EDM, grinding and other processes can be polished with a rotating surface polishing machine or an ultrasonic grinding machine at a speed of 35 000 to 40 000 rpm. Commonly used methods have the diameter Φ 3mm, WA # 400 wheels to remove the white spark layer. Then hand-whetstone grinding, strip oilstone plus kerosene as a lubricant or coolant. The general order of use is # 180 ~ # 240 ~ # 320 ~ # 400 ~ # 600 ~ # 800 ~ # 1000. Many mold makers choose to start at # 400 to save time.

(2) semi-fine cast semi-fine polishing mainly use sandpaper and kerosene. The number of sandpaper is: # 400 ~ # 600 ~ # 800 ~ # 1000 ~ # 1200 ~ # 1500. In practice, # 1500 abrasives are only suitable for hardened tool steels (52 HRC or higher) and are not suitable for pre-hardened steels as this may result in burns on pre-hardened steel surfaces.

If you use a polishing cloth wheel to mix a diamond grinding powder or a polishing paste, the usual grinding sequence is 9 μm (# 1800) to 6 μm (# 3000) to 3 μm (# 8000). Then, polishing was performed with a felt and a diamond polishing paste in the order of 1 μm (# 14000) to 1/2 μm (# 60000) to 1/4 μm (# 100000).

The polishing process requires more than 1 μ m (1 μ m) of precision to be carried out in a clean polishing chamber in the mold shop. If a more sophisticated polishing is required for an absolutely clean space. Dust, smoke, dandruff and mouth water foam are likely to scrapped after a few hours of work to get high-precision polishing surface.
